Tunary

Frequently asked questions

Is Tunary free?

Yes. The tuner and practice tools are free to use, with no signup or install.

Is my microphone recorded or sent anywhere?

No. The microphone is only used while the tuner is listening, and all pitch detection happens locally in your browser. Your audio is never recorded, stored, or uploaded. The browser will ask your permission before the mic turns on, and you can revoke it any time.

Does it work offline?

Yes — once you've loaded it, Tunary keeps working offline (it's an installable web app). The reference-tone, drone, drum machine and chord features all run on your device.

Which instruments and tunings are supported?

Guitar (6-string), bass, ukulele, mandolin and violin, with standard plus alternate/open tunings — Drop D, Open G, Open D, Open E, Open C, DADGAD, half/whole-step down, and custom tunings you build yourself. Chord diagrams are currently provided for guitar tunings.

How accurate is the tuner?

The microphone tuner uses pitch detection that's accurate to within a few cents in a reasonably quiet room. Accuracy depends on your microphone and background noise — a quiet space and a clean note give the best results.

I can't hear any sound — what's wrong?

Almost always it's outside the app: check that your device isn't muted, the volume is up, and (in some browsers) that the browser tab itself isn't muted. The microphone tuner listens and is silent by design — to hear sound, use the Tones, Drone, Drum Machine, or the "Test sound" button in Play.

Why does the mic need HTTPS?

Browsers only allow microphone access on secure (HTTPS) pages. Tunary is served over HTTPS, so this is handled automatically.

Can I embed Tunary on my website?

Yes — Tunary can be embedded as a free iframe on guitar blogs, lesson sites and tab pages. Email hello@tunary.io and we'll send the snippet.

Do you store any of my data?

Only your preferences (like your chosen tuning, reference pitch and volumes), and only on your own device via your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to us. See the Privacy Policy.
